The Legacy Lives On! Divine Distillers Acquires 1859 Cider Company

Divine Distillers, Salem’s first and only distillery, has acquired 1859 Cider Co. Earlier this year, Jason Greenwood and Jennell Ives, owners of Divine Distillers, heard that 1859 Cider Company was likely closing their business. Determined not to see another small business with strong Oregon roots lose their presence in Salem, Jason Greenwood, reached out.

“Dan and Patricia were one of the first people to reach out to us to see if they could help during the early days of the Covid crisis. They generously loaned us vital equipment to be able to produce sanitizer for Oregon. The 1859 pump must have pumped 200,000 gallons of wine during the 4 months that we produced sanitizer. We love how much care and craft Dan and Patricia put into their cider, and when we heard what was happening, we had to reach out and see what we could do to help.”

1859 Cider Company, downtown Salem’s first alcohol producer since 1953, was tucked away in an alley. Their customers could see the fruit presses and operations from their tasting room which was part of their charm. 1859 Cider Company is known for their real, full fruit ciders.

“After surviving the shutdowns from the pandemic and staying in business during 2020, only to be forced to close our doors in June by our landlord, we were simply exhausted and ready to focus on rebuilding our house that was severely damaged from the Beachie Creek wildfire last year. Jason reached out and told us he wanted to continue the brand and cider we worked so diligently to become known for; we want our loyal supporters to be able to enjoy quality cider and saw this could be a win-win,” says Dan and Patricia Fox, owners of 1859 Cider Co.

After a few months of strategy and negotiation to ensure the heritage and top shelf quality of 1859’s ciders would be continued, Divine Distillers, inked a deal with 1859 Cider Company, becoming the new owners.

1859’s amazing ciders will be produced at Divine Distillers’ existing location (2475 25th St SE, Salem, OR 97302) alongside their award-winning brandies, rums and agave spirits.

Divine Distillers currently has two 1859 ciders on tap in their tasting room, ready to enjoy. “We’re developing our business plan to use 1859’s methods and recipes to start full production to continue the legacy of 1859” says Greenwood.
